AUDIO NEWS: 67% tradies want restrictions on selling second hand tools and loads of unhappy customers

Posted: Thursday, January 30th, 2025

Over two thirds of tradespeople are in favour of tighter restrictions on the sale of second hand tools, claims research from Direct Line Business Insurance.

The survey also estimated that nearly half of tradespeople reported being either approached by, or witnessing, someone trying to sell tools they believed were stolen.

The survey data has been released on the eve of a ‘go slow protest’ through London.

Organised by Trades United, the protest calls for more to be done to stop tool theft, tougher sentencing for thieves and a ban on the sale of second hand tools in car boot sales.

A poll of 2,000 homeowners has revealed widespread dissatisfaction with tradespeople.

The research compiled by TrustMark and the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) also highlighted major ‘trust issues’ between tradies and clients, and the significant cost repercussions for homeowners.

Nearly two thirds of gen z respondents reported having issues with tradespeople – the largest of any single demographic in the survey.

While millennials appeared to be the most eager to attempt a DIY fix, make it worse and then call a tradesperson.
