Posted: Tuesday, April 1st, 2025

Nearly 40,000 small and micro businesses are at risk of disappearing from the repair and maintenance sector in the next 10 years, as tradespeople retire.

The data, included in a report from TrustMark, estimates that 44% of the workforce in the RMI sector are 55 or older.

And a quarter of them plan to either semi-retire or stop entirely in the next three years.

The report, based on a survey of over 1,200 small firms, found that nearly half were looking to hire at least one tradesperson.

The self-employed joiner has now had to cancel or schedule work, while he tries to replace his tools.

Norton told his local paper that he had recently invested in new tools because “things were going well business-wise”.
