Andy Cam and Todd Glister investigate rogue training providers

Posted: Wednesday, April 24th, 2024

The heating and plumbing sector is plagued by charlatan training providers scamming innocent tradespeople.

To learn why this has been happening and what needs to be done to stop it, Andy Cam and Todd Glister speak to Jerry Whiteley, a technical manager with the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and John Thompson, the CEO of the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC).

"The fake trainers are feeding off people's vulnerabilities," Jerry says, "especially for people eager to get into the industry and haven't thought it through. If it's too good to be true, it generally is."

Jerry advises looking out for training providers that offer short courses, cost-effective or intensive packages. "You have to question those. They tend to offer work placements at the end of the programme or help to start a business. It never happens."

John argues that the only way to stop rogue trainers is to have a standardised system, where only certified providers can offer training.
