Forest of Dean spread conferred master plasterer title

Posted: Friday, March 29th, 2024

Heritage plasterer Ben Kerslake has been awarded the prestigious title of Master Plasterer in a ceremony in the City of London, The Forester reported.

The title of Master Plasterer is awarded each year by the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers to just a handful of time-served plasterers in recognition of their contribution to the industry.

The Mitcheldean-based craftsman was presented with his certificate by the Lord Mayor of London, Michael Mainelli and the Master of the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers Michael Mainelli.

Ben has been working in the conservation industry for 25 years and has worked on several stand-out projects including a Grand Designs Eco House of the year and the first-ever load-bearing strawbale house.

Ben now focuses his time on passing on his skills to aspiring plasterers and advising those restoring traditional properties.

Along with his wife, Kate, he runs CarringtonLIME Heritage Skills Training from a training centre in Mitcheldean – now the largest provider of lime plastering training in the UK and the only organisation in Gloucestershire to offer students formal qualifications in plastering.

“I’m so lucky to have a job that I love. I get to work on beautiful properties with interesting histories and often in stunning locations.

Ben said: “Tradespeople don’t often get recognised for their knowledge and efforts so this award means a lot to me. It goes some way to making the sore shoulders worthwhile!”
