Chris Frediani and guests discuss educating the next generation of plasterers

Posted: Friday, May 3rd, 2024

Chris Frediani and Bradleigh (Bradders) Hancock are joined by Colin McGaughey, Phil Lewis, and Blaine Gray to understand the skills are being taught to students, identify the knowledge gaps, and figure out why it is so hard to master plastering.

According to Colin, lead judge for Plastering and Plastering & Drylining at SkillBuild, the trade has changed over the years. "Tutors who've come through the new NVQ system are an issue. They don't have the whole skillset required to produce good young plasterers. We're seeing youngsters participating in the competition who don't have the fibrous skills."

Phil from Taylor Hart operates an extensive apprenticeship scheme. "We started an apprentice scheme nine years ago and since then we've trained 26 apprentices."

He believes the CITB has a big part to play, along with colleges and training providers in ensuring newcomers are well taught the skill.
